Media Release:

Queensland Country Womens Association has taken on the challenge of improving health for people living in regional and remote areas.

The Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) is teaming up with nutritionists, funded by the Queensland State Government, to encourage healthier eating.
As part of the QCWA Country Kitchens program, nutritionists have met with QCWA representatives from almost 50 communities around the state.
QCWA Country Kitchens program coordinator Fiona McKenzie said in places where it can be easier to find fast food outlets than fresh fruit and vegetables, maintaining a healthy diet was challenging.
“But the consequence of eating fast food on the health of Queenslanders living in rural areas is alarming,” she said.
Ms McKenzie said she was excited about the positive support received from QCWA members to tackle this huge health problem and their willingness to promote healthy eating.
“The QCWA is perfectly placed to make lasting changes within their communities. They are an integral part of life in regional towns,” Ms McKenzie said.
“Having their support will ensure tasty and nutritious meals are on the menu.”
Country Kitchens was also keen to capitalise on the cooking prowess of QCWA members.
Widely recognised as skilled recipe developers, QCWA members’ talents would be used to develop healthy versions of classic QCWA dishes.
The QCWA Country Kitchens nutritionists have developed a two-hour hands-on nutrition workshop, where participants can have some fun, make friends, learn healthy cooking skills and eat a delicious healthy meal.
Each participant would receive a shopping bag, apron and tea-towel and valuable nutrition information.
QCWA Country Kitchens nutrition workshops would begin in Kingaroy in May. Contact your local facilitators Janelle Reeves at sj.reeves@bigpond.com or on 0419 861 616, or Lois Thurecht at brian.thurecht@bigpond.com.au or on 0407 965 094 to find out how you can get involved.
