Role of the Co-ordinator
Structured Workplace Learning Program (SWLP)
- Identify SWLP needs of each cluster and schools within this cluster - specifically to identify SWLP components of VET (Vocational Education and Training) subjects within schools (Category 1) and vocational learning needs within schools (Category 2)
- Work with the schools to identify students' individual interests and career paths to ensure suitable matching of Work Placements
- Promote the SWLP program with employers/businesses and the community
- Promote the advantages of the SWLP with students and their parents/care givers
- Liaise with industry groups/businesses/employers to provide quality Work Placement opportunities
- Coordinate and facilitate work placements including briefings and inductions prior to placement
- Maintain a database of businesses/employers and their particular requirements/expectations
- Provide support for students undertaking work placement and for businesses/employers hosting them
- Promote and encourage opportunities for special needs students to participate in work placement
- Support special needs students within work placement
Career and Transitions
- Provide up to date and relevant information and resources to schools and teachers about careers, industries, training and transitions
- Facilitate professional development for teachers in the use of these and other tools in incorporating transition and career information as part of the curriculum
- Provide resources and support to ensure all young people from Year 8 develop and update a transition plan
- Provide opportunities for young people to access career information through facilitating attendance at events or activities
- Facilitate the involvement of businesses/ employers and industries in the schools through work placement opportunities, school based traineeships and apprenticeships, part time and casual work and Adopt a School programs
- Promote and facilitate mentoring opportunities
- Advocate and facilitate opportunities for special needs students to access career and transition information and advice particularly indigenous students or those with disabilities
- Build partnerships between schools, businesses, RTOs, community groups to the benefit of young people
- Provide a source of information and referral for young people and those working with them of services and information available
- Provide an "expert" service for alternative education programs/services on resources and information and provides training around these
Adopt a School
Develop and promote a range of Adopt a School initiatives to build links between students, schools, businesses, employer groups and communities such as:
- Tours visits and excursions
- Speakers and demonstrations
- Mentoring students, role modelling and interview training
- Career displays and mobile exhibits
- Part time work opportunities, work experience, SWL and school based new apprenticeships
- Student research and enterprise and mini-enterprise projects
- Forums and seminars
- Career education and advice
- Teacher and student materials and resources, structured learning activities, competitions, games and work simulation exercises
